It’s June and that means the Memorial Day sales are winding down, and we’re still one month away from the likely launch of the Amazon Prime Day savings spectacular sometime next month. So we’ll forgive you for thinking this month is just an afterthought in the savings calendar. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth!

The sixth month in the calendar year ushers in both the official start of summer and a slew of savings that comes with it. June has something for everyone whether you’re talking about spring clearance, Father’s Day deals or some of the semi-annual retail sales that traditionally happen this month.

Here Are the Best June Deals

Food

June has a couple of notable food holidays that usually offer up the opportunity to get some discounted or free food.

For instance, June 2 is National Doughnut Day when many sellers will offer a free doughnut. Interestingly, this is actually the first of two such holidays in the calendar year. (Editor’s note: Read the “hole” story about why we have two doughnut holidays here.)

Meanwhile, June 21 marks the beginning of summer. On that day, several ice cream chains have been known to offer customers a free scoop.

Father’s Day Clearance

After we honor the fathers in our lives on Sunday, June 18, the opportunities for savings really begin. You can typically find cologne, ties, belts and other gift sets that went unsold ahead of the holiday on deep discount after the 18th.

Flower Bulbs

June is a month when you’ll find opportunities to add a little green to your yard while keeping a little extra green in your wallet. Take flower bulbs, for instance.

Planting bulbs is best done in the fall or early spring. That’s when you’ll typically find them rolling out to the big-box home improvement stores and other retailers.

“June is a great time to snag flower bulbs on sale, as it is the end of the season,” says Clark Deals Senior Editor Sarah Goodrum. “You can purchase them at a discounted price and store them in a dry place for a chance to plant them next year! This is a great savings opportunity for the frugal gardener looking to save money on next year’s blooms.”

Free Stuff For Kids & Teens

The school year may already be over or coming to an end soon for a lot of kids, but saving money never goes out of session! There are a variety of free and fun summer activities on tap for youngsters.

For example, when you register at KidsBowlFree.com, you get access to more than 1,500 bowling centers that provide 2 free games of bowling each day to kids during the spring and summer. Shoe rental may be extra; check with participating bowling alley. Meanwhile, there’s also a similar site for skating rinks called KidsSkateFree.com.

In addition, Planet Fitness lets teens work out for free all summer long through August 31!

Finally, a number of theater chains offer cheap family entertainment during the summer. For example, check out the 2023 Regal Summer Movie Express with family movies for just $2 and AMC Summer Movie Camp for Kids with tickets starting at $3.

PC Games

June is typically the month when Steam has a big summer sale. ClarkDeals Deal Digger Daniel Schumpert says that this sale offers a great opportunity to buy hot video game titles for up to 90% off. “The best part is you can purchase games and gift them,” Danny says. “So I usually buy a bunch of cheap games during the summer sale and give them to my nephews at Christmas.”

Free Fishing Days

National Fishing and Boating Week will take place on June 3-11 this year. During the weeklong celebration, a number of states have select days when you can fish without a license. See what your state is doing by visiting TakeMeFishing.org.

Spring Clothes Clearance

Here’s another timely calendar play: As we head into summer, most spring clothing that’s still left on store racks is on extra-deep discount.

But it’s not just light jackets and T-shirts that are on sale this month. You’ll also find workout gear is a steal of a deal. People tend to buy this stuff in spring when the weather first gets warmer, and now it’s time for retailers to clear the remnants out.

Assorted Holiday Savings Opportunities

This month is also one of two times throughout the year when Bath & Body Works hosts its semi-annual sale; if the historical pattern holds again this year, look for this one to get underway around the middle of the month.

June also boasts National Eyewear Day (June 6); National Splurge Day (June 18); and National Sunglasses Day (June 27), among others.

Meanwhile, for all you Clark Howard fans out there, June 20 marks the money expert’s birthday. He’ll be turning 68 this year.

While not exactly a money-saving holiday, Clark does have a birthday wish for you: that you never pay full price for anything.

Coming Soon: July Deals

As you can see, June is a big month for savings. But you can convincingly make the case that July will be even bigger.

Leading the charge next month will be Amazon Prime Day. The two-day sales celebration is expected to return to its July slot again this year now that we’re firmly through the pandemic. However, we’re still waiting on word from Amazon about the exact date in July 2023.

Meanwhile, other retailers, including Best Buy, Target and Walmart, have been known to offer their own sales to compete with Amazon leading up to and during the Prime Day cycle.

So that phenomenon alone makes the coming month a biggie. Add in assorted “Christmas in July” promotions, and you can see why July is likely to pack a money-saving punch for your wallet.

Final Thoughts

Summer is heating up and so are the deals — with the added promise of even more to come. And let’s not forget that right now is a great time to start picking the best fresh, local produce at a farmer’s market near you.
