The cost of batteries can add up quickly. If you find that you’re picking up a new pack every time you’re out, you may not realize how much money you’re actually spending.

To see where we’ve found the best battery prices over time, I looked back at more than 70 battery deals our team has posted on ClarkDeals.com since 2016. I also compared the current prices of AA and AAA batteries at several online retailers to find out where you’re most likely to get the best price per battery.

In this article, I’ll take a close look at a few of the best places to find cheap batteries.

This article was updated in January 2024 and I review it every six months. Detailed notes on all updates can be found here.

Where To Buy Cheap Batteries

When it comes to getting the best price on batteries, there are a few rules to follow: Comparing prices, waiting for deals and buying off-brand are three great ways to save. Using these methods, you can find great prices on batteries.

“My one rule is that no one should ever buy a brand-name battery,” says money expert Clark Howard. “Almost all of the off-brands or store-brands are made by one of the majors.”

Knowing that the quality would be the same or similar, I researched prices for some of the most popular and most affordable off-brand and store-brand batteries.

Below, you’ll find detailed information on where to find the best prices, and ultimately, where to make your final purchase.

Where To Find the Best Limited-Time Deals on Batteries

Over the past six years, our team at ClarkDeals.com has been looking for the best deals available online. In that time, we’ve seen more than 70 great deals on batteries. In the chart below, you’ll see that many of those deals came from Amazon, Best Buy, Woot and Meh.

Battery deals found by ClarkDeals.com between 2016 and January 29, 2024

As you can see, we’ve posted most of our deals on batteries from Amazon. The best deal we’ve seen on AmazonBasics AA batteries was a 100-count pack for $14. That’s only 14 cents per battery!

We’ve also posted several deals on batteries from Best Buy. In the past, Deals of the Day have included 48-packs of AA and AAA batteries for as low as $6. If you can catch this deal, you’ll be paying just 13 cents per battery. That’s the lowest price we’ve seen.

Daily deal sites such as Woot and Meh also offer great deals on batteries, but in my experience, they sell out fast. We’ve seen some great deals on bulk batteries from these sites including 192-count packs for $30 at Meh. At 16 cents per battery, you’re still getting a great deal.

In addition to these stores, in the past, The Home Depot has matched Best Buy’s all-time-low pricing with a deal on a 60-pack of its store-brand HDX AA batteries for $8. Meanwhile, Walmart has been a close runner-up with past deals on 50-count packs of discount batteries for $6.97. That means you’d be paying only 14 cents per battery.

The Top 5 Best Places To Buy Cheap Batteries

While finding a great deal on batteries is one of the best ways to get the lowest price per battery, you may not be able to wait for a sale. If you’re looking for the lowest daily prices on batteries, check out Amazon, Lowe’s, The Home Depot, Walmart and Best Buy.

I visited each of the following retailers’ websites to find the best available deals on AA and AAA batteries in January 2024. I’ve provided details about each store later in this article, but just below you’ll see the per-battery cost of the best deals I found.

AAAAA
Amazon$0.25$0.27
Lowe's$0.27$0.27
The Home Depot$0.27$0.27
Walmart$0.28$0.26
Best Buy$0.33$0.29
Costco$0.37$0.37
Sam's Club$0.42$0.42
Office Depot$0.77$0.77
CVS$0.66$1.10

Amazon and Best Buy offer competitive prices on store-brand batteries while The Home Depot, Lowe’s and Walmart offer great deals on generic brands. As a comparison, I found Duracell AA batteries at CVS for as much as $1.80 each and AAA batteries for as much as $2.07. CVS-brand batteries ranged from $0.66-$1.10 each, which was the worst price I saw on average.

“If you buy batteries at a drugstore, convenience store, supermarket or anything like that, what you’re paying per battery is mind-blowing,” says Clark. “So, it’s not just that you buy the store brand, it’s where you buy also that really matters.”

For the best overall prices, consider shopping at one of these top five places to buy cheap batteries.

1. Amazon

For Amazon Prime members, AmazonBasics batteries are going to be hard to beat. “I’m a big fan of AmazonBasics,” says Clark regarding the best battery deals.

In January 2024, I found a 100-pack of Amazon Basics AA batteries for $24.79 ($0.25 each) and a 100-pack of Amazon Basics AAA batteries for $26.62 ($0.27 each). These are the best prices I found overall during my research. In the past, our team at ClarkDeals has found AmazonBasics AA batteries even cheaper at $14 for 100. That drops the normal 25 cents per battery price to only 14 cents!

Of course, Prime members are eligible for free two-day shipping for even more savings.

2. Lowe’s

Lowe’s offers an excellent daily price on ACDelco-brand batteries if you’re willing to buy in bulk.

When I compared prices in January 2024, I found a 100-count pack of ACDelco AA batteries for $26.51 and AAA batteries for the same price. That makes the final price $0.27 per battery!

We’ve also posted a few deals from Lowe’s on batteries over the years. The most recent deal we’ve seen was a 36-pack of Rayovac batteries for $10, which made them the same price as the ACDelco batteries! Plus, Rayovac is a recommended battery brand by Consumer Reports (subscription required).

You can shop for batteries at Lowe’s in-store or online. Lowe’s offers free shipping on orders over $45, but you can also choose free in-store pickup where available to avoid additional delivery fees.

3. The Home Depot

I found the next best prices on batteries on average at The Home Depot. There, you’ll find great prices on generic brands (including ACDelco) as well as the company’s HDX brand.

I found 120 HDX AA batteries for $34.98, which works out to be $0.29 per battery. AAA batteries are available for the same price. However, I did find a better deal on ACDelco batteries at The Home Depot in January that includes 200 AA batteries for $53.02, which makes each battery approximately $0.27. AAA ACDelco batteries were available in the same quantity for $53.75, which works out to be about the same price per battery!

If you shop online at The Home Depot, choose free in-store pickup or free ship-to-store when available. Some battery purchases are eligible for free delivery while others have a shipping charge of up to $8.99.

4. Walmart

Walmart is another great place to shop for off-brand batteries. When I shopped for batteries in January 2024, I found great prices on ACDelco batteries at Walmart.

A 100-count pack of ACDelco AA batteries was available for $27.70 when purchased online. That made the price per battery $0.28! For AAA batteries, I found a 100-count ACDelco pack for $26.39 ($0.26 per battery.)

If you can get free in-store pickup, Walmart may be a better buy. However, while you may find low prices online at Walmart, you can expect to pay shipping fees if in-store pickup isn’t available

While Walmart’s prices are great on off-brand batteries, name brands come with bigger price tags. For example, a 36-pack of Duracell AA batteries was available for $26.80 in January 2024, which means they cost $0.74 each.

5. Best Buy

As you can see above, Best Buy’s batteries aren’t going to have the lowest daily price you can find. However, if you can grab these batteries when they’re on sale, the price will be impossible to beat.

In the past, ClarkDeals has seen daily deals including 48-count packs of AA and AAA batteries for as low as $6. That’s only 13 cents per battery! Again, that’s the lowest price we’ve seen. I always try to grab this deal when it comes up, and the batteries last a long time.

Bookmark this page to keep up with the best daily deals at Best Buy, and when you see the batteries on sale, be sure to get them! Choose free in-store pickup nearby to avoid any additional shipping costs. In my experience, they’re typically ready for pickup in less than an hour.

Final Thoughts

Overall, you’ll likely find low prices on store-brand and off-brand batteries at Amazon, Lowe’s, The Home Depot, Walmart and Best Buy.

If you see a good price on a battery brand that you’re not familiar with, especially at a store like Walmart, be sure to read customer reviews. And check out Consumer Reports’ battery reviews if you have a membership to learn more about the brand’s performance.

“There are some sellers who sell these batteries that aren’t very good,” cautions Clark. “So if you buy completely off-brand batteries, you could end up with one that’s very unreliable and doesn’t have a long life.”

Amazon Prime members, Sam’s Club members and Costco members all have access to great prices on quality store-brand batteries like AmazonBasics, Member’s Mark and Kirkland Signature batteries respectively. Free shipping with these options also leads to additional savings.

Also, if you can hold out for the sale on batteries at Best Buy, you have the chance to get the lowest per-battery price that our team has seen in the past!

Finally, don’t be afraid to check out other local and online retailers for battery deals. One reader recommended checking out Ocean State Job Lot for batteries. In January 2024, I found a 96-count pack of ACDelco AA batteries for $14.99, which is just 16 cents per battery! AAA batteries were available for the same price. Unfortunately, these deals were only available in-store at select locations, and there isn’t currently a physical location in my state.

No matter where you decide to shop, be sure to use a tool like Google Shopping to make sure you’re getting the best available deal before purchasing.
