Can heartburn be relieved without medication?

If you’re one of the millions of Americans who gets heartburn, medical hypnosis may be the answer to your problems.

More than 60 million Americans experience heartburn at least once a month, according to the American College of Gastroenterology. Symptoms are more common among pregnant women and the elderly.

Got heartburn? Try hypnotherapy

To control infrequent heartburn, many people will avoid trigger foods, stop smoking and take an over-the-counter antacid. But these methods don’t provide relief for everyone.

Some patients will require prescription medication to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

NBC News recently reported that medical hypnosis is emerging as an alternative treatment for stomach problems, including acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome.

Psychologist Laurie Keefer leads patients through a three-month series of sessions using progressive relaxation techniques that focus on the connection between the mind and gut.

The client is fully aware of what’s going on the entire time —  unlike hypnosis you may have seen on TV.

“There’s patients who often think she’s going to make me lose control, cluck like a chicken, bark like a dog. There’s none of that,” Keefer told NBC News.

Dr. Keefer offers medical hypnosis in-person and remotely. Most insurance plans cover the treatment, and the cost for each visit is between $100 and $150.
