The J.M. Smucker Company is announcing a voluntary recall of specific lots of 9Lives Protein Plus wet canned cat food because of thiamine deficiency.

9Lives cat food recalled due to low levels of thiamine
If you’re a pet parent with feline fur babies, you’ll want to be aware of this new recall from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that involves one of the most popular wet cat foods.
Smucker says it discovered low levels of thiamine in certain lots of its 9Lives pet food during routine in-house product testing.
Thankfully, no illnesses related to this issue have been reported to date, but the following products are being recalled out of an abundance of caution.

The affected products have been distributed to a variety of retailers across the country.
Thiamine — also known as Vitamin B1 — is necessary for proper gastrointestinal and neurological function in cats.
If you have any of these products in your pantry at home, throw them away immediately or return them to the store for a refund.
Thiamine deficiency, while reversible if caught early, can manifest in a wide range of ways.
“Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, failure to grow, and weight loss,” the FDA reports. “In advanced cases, neurological signs can develop, which include ventroflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, mental dullness, blindness, wobbly walking, circling, falling, seizures and sudden death.”
