Look like reports of the early demise of Macy’s have been greatly exaggerated!

Because of strong customer traffic, the iconic retailer is going on a nationwide hiring spree at a store near you this month.

Late holiday hiring push at Macy’s

Macy’s gave job seekers an early Christmas present on December 1 when it announced plans to add 7,000 additional seasonal associates to the payroll before the holidays are through.

“Macy’s has had a great start to this holiday season with high customer volume across our business. Due to the strong traffic in our stores, we are adding associates in our stores across the country to ensure that customers continue to receive the high level of service they have come to expect from us,” said John Harper, Macy’s chief stores officer.

The vast majority of the jobs will be part-time and offer flexible schedules, plus a discount on store merchandise.

Despite the talk about customer traffic being the main reason behind the late holiday hiring push, you have to wonder if something else isn’t up.

Maybe the store is partly trying to overcompensate with more headcount after a credit card processing issue frustrated customers and created long lines on Black Friday.

The timing of that snafu was unfortunate given the importance of the day after Thanksgiving to retailers’ bottom lines.
