PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — He’s worked for a popular restaurant chain for about a year, but never received a paycheck.
But that will soon change for a man in Rhode Island.
Here’s what it’s like to work in an unpaid position
Caleb Dyl, 21, was a prep-cook for Middletown, Rhode Island’s Applebee’s, starting in August 2014, WPRI reported.
Dyl is autistic and was placed in the job by the private social service agency Resources for Human Development.
The nonprofit, which gets money from the state, placed Dyl in company’s training program to see if he was able to do the job. He was in the unpaid position for nearly a year before his status was to change in August 2014, when Applebee’s was to hire him as regular part-time worker, WPRI reported.
Dyl’s parents filled out forms for direct deposit and W-4 so he could get paid, but the money never came. They were told the papers were misplaced. They filled out another set and told his caseworker at RHD, and still no money came.
Apparently Dyl didn’t clock in, something his case worker should have helped him to do, WPRI reported.
Once Applebee’s found out about the issue, they agreed to pay for 166 hours of work RHD observed by the caseworkers. Dyl’s parents said that wasn’t enough; that he actually worked a total of about 480 hours.
The chain has now agreed to pay Dyl for 480 hours. At the same time, state officials said they are investigating what happened, WPRI reported.
