Amazon is offering employees up to $5,000 to quit. What in the world are they thinking?!
The online retail giant got some really negative publicity about its Pay To Quit program. Under the program’s terms, if you’ve been working for 1 year and decide you want to quit, they’ll pay you $2,000. After 2 years, you’ll get $3,000. After 3 years, you’ll get $4,000 and so on. The program caps out at $5,000.
So is this some cynical attempt to get rid of people who may have moved up the pay scale and then hire some newbie replacement on the cheap? That was tone of much of the reaction in the aftermath of this news.
But that’s not what it’s all about at all. The reality is a lot of people hate going to work. They dread being there. But they’re creatures of habit and they prefer the devil they know to the devil they don’t know. And so they stay.
But Amazon doesn’t want you to stay if you don’t want to be there. It’s not good for them and it’s not good for you. That’s what this program is all about: Giving you the push to go do something you’ll enjoy more. Because who wants to spend the majority of their waking hours working somewhere they dread?
Despite all the negative feedback Amazon has gotten, this program is well timed. We’re in the stage of recovery for employment. After being pathetic for years, the job market is now mediocre headed to good, depending on where you are in the country. Some places are already in the good stages.
I have had the good fortune most of my life to do things I love. But I did have jobs I hated. I remember at one, the time would go by soooo slowly every day, and I became a real clock watcher. So I left and my life got so much better. Of course, nobody paid me to leave!
But think about it in your own life. Maybe your employer won’t pay you to leave. Yet maybe it will pay you back over and over again to leave some place where you feel brain dead to go do something you love!
