How to make the cheapest chocolate cake ever

You probably have some of the ingredients already in your house, but here they are and the cost for each — if you’re in the mood to make the cheapest chocolate cake ever!

This completely vegan recipe is from Sprinklewithflour.com

  • 3 Cups all-purpose flour ($.21)
  • 2 Cups sugar ($.33)
  • 1/3 Cup cocoa ($.11)
  • 1 tsp salt ($.03)
  • 2 tsp baking soda ($.03)
  • 3/4 cups vegetable oil ($.35)
  • 2 Tbsp white vinegar ($.03)
  • 2 tsp vanilla ($.64)
  • 2 Cups hot water (free)

=Grand total: $1.73

How to make it

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa, salt, and baking soda.  Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.  Pour the oil, white vinegar, vanilla, and hot water into the well.  Gently mix with a fork until combined.  Do not use an electric mixer.  Bake in an ungreased 9×13 baking dish, for 30-35 minutes. Cake is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Be careful not to over bake.  Cool completely or at least until the cake is barely warm.

If you want to add a glaze, that’ll be a little extra, but it’s still super cheap. (Unfortunately though, it’s not vegan.) In order to make the glaze, check out the full recipe here
