If you’re a savvy shopper, you’ll know that especially with seasonal items, there is a good time to buy something — and there is a bad time to buy something if you want to get a great deal. October is a time when the colors change and the leaves begin to fall, but prices begin to fall too — on certain items at least. Although the below items are generally a good deal, you’ll want to remember to comparison shop before you buy to ensure you get the very best price!

Here are 7 things that are a good deal during the month of October.

These are the best deals in October

1. Holiday travel

Clark says that the sooner you buy holiday travel, the better. But there will be some popup sales as airlines encourage travelers to go ahead and book their holiday travel.

“If you plan on traveling for the holidays, now is the time to book. Fares are a decent deal right now but come the middle of October, you’ll really see airfares rise.”

Southwest Airlines is having a sale right now with one-way fares from $49, while Frontier Airlines is having a sale with fares as low as $29. If you plan to travel internationally anytime soon, it’s also worth checking into Wow Air’s fares. Wow Air has fares to Europe starting at $99.99!

2. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

According to Consumer Reports, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are a great deal right now — and we would agree! For example, you can find a 2-pack of the Nest Protect wired or battery-powered smoke detector for $179.99 at Costco, in addition to a First Alert combination smoke and carbon monoxide detector for $22.36 at Amazon.

To find the best smoke detector for your needs, check out Consumer Reports’ guide here.

3. Outdoor furniture

Outdoor furniture is a great buy in October as the temperature drops and people spend less time outside. The key is finding it however, as much of the supply has likely been picked over following the spring and summer seasons. But, there are a few places you can look.

Walmart and home improvement stores such as The Home Depot and Lowe’s Home Improvement have great savings on outdoor furniture. Lowe’s is offering up to 75% off outdoor items right now, while Home Depot is offering savings of up to 50%. You’ll also find great deals at Walmart too, such as this Mainstays Bristol Springs outdoor dining table for $44.67 or this Mainstays 4-piece outdoor conversation set for $161.10.

4. Camping gear

As the weather cools off, deals on camping gear heat up. Since we are now well beyond the busy summer camping season, you’ll find deals on tents, sleeping bags, backpacks and a lot more!

Outdoor outfitters such as REI, REI Garage, Cabela’s, (specifically the Bargain Cave), and Bass Pro Shops might come to mind when you think about buying camping gear. But Walmart and Amazon are also great places to scoop up deals on outdoor gear and supplies. For example, you’ll find this Ozark Trail 3-person dome tent for $24.94 at Walmart right now!

5. Smartphones

Whenever there’s a big phone release such as the new iPhone KR, a ton of older models hit the market as used inventory. And that means big savings for you!

eBay is a great place to check for used and refurbished smartphones, as is Gazelle and Swappa. However, some big box stores also have their own refurbished inventory, such as Walmart and Best Buy. Though companies that resell phones restore the phones they sell to make sure they are in good working order, you’ll also want to make sure that the seller has a decent return policy in case you happen to get a lemon.

And if you’d rather get a new phone, there are a ton of options out there for around $200. Clark is a big fan of the Moto G6 smartphone that recently dropped in price to $229.99!

6. Athletic shoes

As the peak season of enjoying the great outdoors comes to a close, athletic shoes also drop in price. At Clark Deals, we have seen fantastic deals on Asics, Adidas, Nike and New Balance athletic shoes for $30 and under. eBay is a great place to find deals on men’s and women’s shoes under $30, in addition to Rakuten and clearance sections at brand name stores. It also pays to pay attention to Joe’s New Balance Outlet’s daily deals, which often offer savings of up to 50% off other stores on New Balance shoes. If you need a new pair of athletic shoes, now’s the time to look!

7. Mattresses

If your mattress is 7 to 10 years old, it’s probably time to kick it to the curb. Consumer Reports finds that mattresses are a good deal in October, with many retailers dishing out deals around Columbus Day.

But possibly the best way to get a great deal on a mattress is to consider the disrupters in the market. As the news of Mattress Firm closing over 700 stores made headlines, it’s become clear that consumers are interested in new ways to buy mattresses.

Casper is one such disrupter that ships your memory foam mattress direct to you in a tiny box. Zinus is another memory foam mattress we’ve seen as low as $179 for a queen and $209 for a king that gets rave reviews. And of course one of Clark’s favorite places to find mattresses is Costco! Clark has been a big fan of the Novafoam mattresses that Costco sells, and you can save up to $200 on these mattresses right now.

Check out the Consumer Reports’ reliability ratings for the best mattresses, and also check out Clark’s guide for where to find the best deal.
