Earning the Southwest Companion Pass Just Got Easier for Many Travelers

Have you ever wanted to travel the country with a friend or family member? The Southwest Companion Pass has made that possible for many.

And now you can get the popular airline’s Companion Pass perk more easily — thanks to a new credit card promotion.

Southwest is offering a new welcome bonus for three of its branded Chase credit cards that could earn you a Companion Pass through February 2022.

Get Southwest’s Companion Pass via New Credit Card Offers

In February 2021, Chase and Southwest rolled out a new welcome bonus structure that offers the Companion Pass as an incentive.

Normally, you’d need to complete 100 one-way flights or earn 125,000 Rapid Rewards points in a calendar to qualify for this perk, which allows customers to select one person to fly along with them for free on eligible flights.

But new credit card users now have a chance to get a Companion Pass for far less!

New credit card customers can earn the Southwest Airlines Companion Pass through February 2022 by spending $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of card membership.

This new welcome bonus offer is good for only new sign-ups and only until March 10, 2021.

Changes in the Southwest Credit Card Welcome Bonus Offer

The new offer includes the Companion Pass, but it takes away rewards point opportunities in other areas:

New OfferEarn Companion Pass through 2/28/2022 plus 30,000 points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months.

Earn 2 points per $1 spent on Southwest purchases.
Old OfferEarn up to 80,000 bonus points. Earn 50,000 bonus points after you spend $2,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. Plus, earn an additional 30,000 bonus points after you spend $10,000 on purchases in the first 9 months from account opening.

Plus, earn 5 points per $1 spent on select Southwest purchases for a limited time.

This new (and, if nothing else, less complicated) offer is good for the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus, Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier and Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority credit cards.

What Is the Southwest Airlines Companion Pass?

The Companion Pass is a Southwest Airlines benefit that allows you to choose one person to fly with you for a year, free of airline charges, every time you purchase or redeem points for a flight.

You’ll still be responsible for taxes and fees for the seat for your companion, which Southwest says start at $5.60 for a one-way flight.

Clark Howard Carries a Southwest Credit Card in His Wallet

Money expert Clark Howard carries the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card as one of the credit cards in his wallet.

He chose the card specifically for the Companion Pass. It lets his wife travel with him for free.

Clark takes as many as 30 trips during a normal year, so this credit card’s annual fee is worth it to him.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought his travel habits to a halt, but Clark keeps this card active so that he’ll have his Companion Pass ready to go when the time is right.

But before you join him in applying for this card, you’ll want to make sure you read his rules for using a credit card and consider whether a simple cash back card may be a better choice for your spending habits.

Final Thoughts

The Companion Pass is a great way for frequent travelers to bring along a friend or family member on their ventures.

This credit card offer gives new customers a way to experience the Companion Pass at a lower barrier than normal.

And you’re likely gaining a solid travel credit card in the process.

The Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority card is in Clark Howard’s wallet, and the Southwest Rapid Rewards card is on our list of best travel credit cards at the $99 annual fee price point.

If you are comfortable with health conditions and cleared for travel in the pandemic era, this could be a great way to make some memories with a person close to you in 2021 and beyond.
