RECALL ALERT: Kroger beef may be contaminated with plastic

Some of the beef sold at one of America’s most popular grocery stores is being recalled because it may be contaminated, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said this week.

More than 35,000 pounds of raw ground beef processed by North Carolina-based JBS USA Inc. and sold at Kroger — among other places — may have “extraneous materials, specifically hard plastic,” the agency said in a press release.

The affected meat was produced on March 22, 2018, and bears the establishment number “EST. 34176” inside the USDA mark of inspection, the department said.

“The problem was discovered after the firm received a complaint from a consumer who found blue, hard plastic pieces in one of the products,” FSIS said.

No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported in connection with the beef, which was shipped to distribution centers in Indiana and Virginia “for further distribution to retail locations,” the agency said.

The agency said that it was concerned that people may have frozen the meat in their freezers. “Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” FSIS said.
