GM is recalling nearly a quarter million vehicles in the United States and Canada because of the potential for trapped gas in the brake system that could increase the risk of a crash.

A look at GM’s brake recall

After receiving some 375 warranty claims related to “spongy” brakes, GM has determined the cause to be faulty brake manufacturing and has issued a safety recall.

This recall involves 210,628 vehicles in the United States and 19,385 vehicles in Canada.

According to SaferCar.gov, the affected models include:

  • Chevrolet Cruze 2018 – 2019
  • Chevrolet Equinox 2018 – 2019
  • Chevrolet Impala 2018 – 2019
  • Chevrolet Malibu 2018
  • Chevrolet Volt 2018 – 2019
  • GMC Terrain 2018 – 2019
  • Buick LaCrosse 2018 – 2019
  • Buick Regal 2018 – 2019
  • Cadillac XTS 2018 – 2019
  • Cadillac XTS Professional 2018 – 2019
  • Chevrolet Bolt 2018 – 2019

The rear-brake caliper pistons may contain trapped hydrogen gas that could be released into the brake system. If that happens, rear-brake performance may be reduced, leading to a soft or spongy feel when pressing the brake pedal and increasing the risk of a crash.

Thankfully, GM is not aware of any accidents caused by the manufacturing defect.

If your vehicle is under recall, dealers will “bleed” the brake system to release any gas from the rear brake system.
