Starbucks helps employees in wake of Harvey and Irma

After the devastation caused by hurricanes Harvey and Irma, individuals, organizations and businesses have stepped up to help those trying to rebuild in the aftermath.

Starbucks pays, provides grants to employees affected by hurricanes

Starbucks took their employees’ preparation for hurricanes Harvey and Irma so seriously that the stores in danger zones closed up shop days before the storms hit. The affected employees were provided with catastrophic pay to cover expenses while they could not work.

The company also provides grants from their Caring Unites Partners (or CUP) fund to employees in need. CUP fund administrators have already processed more than 1,000 grants for employees affected by Harvey and Irma and are working to provide as much aid as they are able.

Almost any business can aid employees in need — and get tax breaks

Even you run a business that doesn’t quite have the resources Starbucks has, there are still steps you can take to help employees without bankrupting the company — and you can take advantage of tax breaks for some types of aid as defined by the IRS.

According to the Wall Street Journal, there are five cost-effective ways to help employees affected by disaster.

  • Direct assistance
  • Donations of time off
  • Retirement plan withdrawals
  • Company-sponsored charities
  • Sharing time off
