Bad news: Fewer small businesses are offering health benefits

Healthcare is something we all need at some point in our lives, so why are fewer small businesses offering it?

Small businesses caught between employees and healthcare

The Kaiser Family Foundation has released a study surveying small business employers on healthcare found that only 50% offered coverage this year. Small businesses are defined as those having 50 or fewer employees, according to AP News.

Although healthcare costs increases have slowed over the past few years, it is still growing faster than inflation — meaning small businesses often can’t charge a reasonable price for their goods and services and provide health benefits.

Some small businesses try to solve the issue by offering employees money to buy coverage independently. However, there does not seem to be another widely applicable solution now while small business owners are caught between a rock and a hard place.

If you work for a small business without health benefits, you may want to consider looking at other possible jobs. National unemployment is at 4.4% as of August 2017, so you’re chances of finding a different job are looking up!
