Best deal found: Once the price of gas went down, we carpooled with some friends from Raleigh and drove to the Appalachians for fall “leaf peeping”. We churned apples by hand and made 16 gallons of apple cider (for free!). We stayed with friends and hiked the area (also free). The leaves were perfect and overall it was a wonderful and inexpensive weekend.

Destination: Alaska
Best deal found: We are panning for gold in Fairbanks, Alaska. We would have starved to death as miners based on the amount of gold we recovered while panning.

Destination: Juneau Alaska
Best deal found:  Since we cruised in late May we beat the peak season prices. Mendenhall glacier was breathtaking. You could walk very close to see the glacier and if you wish you could take a dip in icy cold water that runs nearby.

Destination: Valdez, Alaska
Best deal found:  Didn’t go but across the street from the house. There are so many eagles hanging out by the streams now that the fish are in them. I took quite a few pics of him and was just watching me.

Destination: Amelia Island
Best deal found: This picture was taken on a sunset cruise that departed from Amelia Island, Florida and passed into Georgia. We were able to see the wild horses on Cumberland Island and many other beautiful things. It was guided by a local family that had been active in the community for over 4 generations, therefore they had plenty of off the map history to share. It wasn’t the steal of the century, however we found it to be a great value for $14/per person.

Destination: Kenai River- Soldotna, Alaska
Best deal found: I found this isolated place on the Kenai River in Soldotna, Alaska to do some salmon fishing. Saved money on bait as we did not use any. There are so many salmon in the river, you just try to hook them with a bare hook. I guess I do better with bait as I did not hook any.

Destination: Torshavn Harbor, Faroe Islands
Best deal found: One day car rental through Avis, about $65 USD was much less than taking one of the ship’s tour. Avis provided pick up and return to the ship as well. In addition it gave us the freedom to explore this beautiful place at our own pace and see places the ship’s tour did not go to.
