New Cruise App
Royal Caribbean Cruises offers a new app, RoyaliQ, that completes the check-in process before arriving at a ship.
Upon arrival, cruisers will be able to walk right on the vessel without stopping at a desk, as long as they have their phone/device handy. The app will pair with a facial recognition system at the pier to verify their identity as they head to the gangway.
Once on board, the app also will serve as a room key. As long as passengers are carrying their phone, their room doors will unlock as they approach them.
Royal Caribbean’s app also will let passengers order drinks that will be delivered to wherever they are on a vessel, reserve shore excursions, make dinner reservations and track bags from the pier until it is delivered to the cabin.
Other app functions include controlling and adjusting cabin lights and temperature. The app also will tie into on-board games and offer itinerary information and ship maps.
This useful app will save travelers many hours while skipping embarkation day check-in, waiting in line to board, tracking down their bags, and making show and restaurant reservations.
Royal Caribbean will be rolling out the app to more ships over the coming months (13% of the company’s global fleet will be using the app by the end of the year) with app access across half of the fleet by the end of 2018 and on all vessels by the end of 2019.
The app functions in a similar way with those offered on Princess Cruises ships called Ocean Medallion. However, it requires passengers to wear a small, personalized neck medallion that is issued before sailing.

SPECIAL HOTEL & RESORT OFFERS

Best Value Hotels
TripAdvisor has recently announced the 10 Best Value Hotels in the U.S. this fall, based on traveler reviews and TripAdvisor price comparison of 200 booking sites for the lowest seasonal hotel rates. To qualify as a Best Value Hotel, a property must have at least 3.5 stars and four bubbles on TripAdvisor, and offer seasonal nightly average rates that are at least 20% below the city average and cost less than $300 per night.
Properties in popular travel destinations that offer the combination of quality rooms and amenities, great location and low prices are often trendy or fun independent properties with local flavor.
Case in point: Lone Star Court in Austin, Texas. This boutique hotel features an Austin and Texas Hill Country aesthetic. Lone Star Court is a true piece of Americana, pairing retro with modern design twists. A TripAdvisor reviewer commented, “I have stayed in all the hotels in the area – this is the one I keep coming back to.”
Guest rooms feature a retro decor theme and have sitting areas, full-size fridges and wraparound porches with rocking chairs.
Free perks include continental breakfast, parking, and loaner bikes. Amenities include an outdoor pool, fitness center, live music and outdoor fire pits. The on-site restaurant and The Water Trough Bar serves cocktails and a Texas Hill Country-style menu (live music calendar), and there’s also a food truck.
It’s located in The Domain area of the city, known for the shopping.
Rates from $148.

Binge in NYC
The Gregory Hotel in New York has launched a new Ex-stream-ly Cozy package that will appeal to anyone who wants their next weekend away to include a lot of relaxing in bed watching Netflix. The package – which starts from $249 per night  will include a room with streaming services like Netflix so you can watch your favorite shows, and “curated Stranger Things snacks and beverages”, including canned wine, Heathy Skoop’s Sleep Protein if you’re kept awake by nightmares of the Upside Down, and Eleven’s Eggos to munch on.
For true fans of the show, there will also be a Stranger Things light-up wall tapestry depicting Will’s message from the Upside Down along with a pillowcase, and a Stranger Things mug to take home. Taking a vacation to watch Stranger Things instead of exploring NYC might sound like a bit of a crazy idea, but you may need a way to relax after a long day of exploring.
Valid on stays through August 30. Blackout dates may apply.
The Gregory was restored and reopened in 2015 with original architectural elements. It’s located just around the corner from the Empire State Building and within a short walk of Penn Station.
