TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Following the Eclipse
Watch for the next edition of Clark’s e-Scapes on Friday, August 25. In the interim we’ll be headed west to witness the total solar eclipse. Where will you be watching? Be safe during the viewing with proper lens coating and avoiding the fakes!

Falcon Fans!
Hey, Atlanta Football fans, “Football Fun Day” is set for Saturday, August 26. Be a part of history in celebrating the opening of the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the first Atlanta Falcons home game. The massive new stadium cost over a billion dollars to build!
The Centennial Park District will be hosting a day filled with football fun for all ages. Atlanta Streetcar and MARTA make stops in the District, meaning the area is extremely accessible no matter which part of the city you’re coming from.
Start your day from 9A-2P at the free College Football Hall of Fame’s outdoor family festival. August 26 is also the start of the college football season, so explore one the best Hall of Fame facilities in the country and immerse yourself in football fandom. Enjoy music by The Railers and local marching bands, photos with mascots and interactive booths.
Hang out in the Centennial Park District at sports bar STATS Food + Drink to get your pregame on from 2-6P. Soak in all the football fun with food and drinks while watching pre-game coverage on one of the bar’s 70 high-definition TVs. It’s only a short walk from the stadium, too.
The first home game at the new stadium sees the Falcons hosting the Arizona Cardinals in a preseason contest starting at 7P.

Bye-Bye Big Ben
Britain’s much-loved Big Ben will fall silent for four years from next week as conservation work is carried out on the famous 19th century bell in a clock tower next to the Houses of Parliament.
It will be the longest period that Big Ben, whose bongs are familiar to many people around the world because of their use in BBC radio and television broadcasts, has been silent in its 157-year history.
The last bong before the refurbishment will be at noon (1100 GMT) on August 21.
Because the clock mechanism will be temporarily out of action, a modern electric motor will drive the clock hands until the clock is reinstated. Parliament also said that the clock’s faces would have to be covered up while they are being repaired. “However, to ensure that the public are still able to set their watches by this most important of time pieces, one working clock face will remain visible at all times throughout the works,” it said.
The clock chimes will continue to be rung on important occasions such as New Year’s Eve.
The Great Bell, popularly called Big Ben, weighs 13.7 tons and strikes every hour to the note of E. Four smaller bells also chime every 15 minutes.
The Elizabeth Tower, which is 315 feet high, is the most photographed building in Britain.
The tower itself is commonly referred to as Big Ben even though the name applies only to the bell.
The clock’s cogs, hands and four dials will be removed, cleaned up and repaired as part of the work.
The project’s cost was estimated last year at $37.7 million.

NOTE: Airline fees can and often do exceed the cost of your flight! Additional charges now apply to budget and sale rates on most airlines for a carry-on bag, checked baggage and advance seat assignments. The least expensive fees are charged when these options are purchased during the ticket booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
