CBL & Associates, a major mall operator based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, will close 73 of its malls and shopping centers nationwide on Thanksgiving Day, Clark.com has confirmed.
Department stores, movie theaters, restaurants and stores with exterior entrances will still have the option to open.

Mall operator to close most locations for Thanksgiving
The closings will reportedly allow about 1,500 mall employees and between 750 and 2,000 retail workers per location to take the holiday off. The shopping centers will reopen Friday at 6 a.m.
“We want to bring back the excitement of Black Friday shopping as the true start of the holiday shopping season and allow our employees, retailers, and shoppers to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with their families,” said Stephen Lebovitz, President and CEO, CBL & Associates Properties, Inc. “After evaluating feedback from our mall employees and retail partners as well as input from our shoppers, we determined that this was the best decision for our properties.”

The announcement comes after Mall of America, the largest shopping center in the country, also decided it won’t open on Thanksgiving.
What’s different this year? There has been a lot of backlash from consumers over the practice of opening on the holiday, and some retailers may have realized that it doesn’t really help their bottom line.
