Fast-food chain Sonic Drive-In may have been the victim of a massive data breach affecting millions of customers, according to news reports.

Millions could be affected by Sonic data breach

The Oklahoma City-based company, which serves 3 million people a day, indicated that credit card customers were most likely at risk after the burger and shake giant was informed of “unusual activity” from its credit card processor. As many as 5 million people could reportedly be at risk for identity fraud.

“Our credit card processor informed us last week of unusual activity regarding credit cards used at SONIC,” the company said in a statement to the Clark Howard team. “The security of our guests’ information is very important to SONIC. We are working to understand the nature and scope of this issue, as we know how important this is to our guests. We immediately engaged third-party forensic experts and law enforcement when we heard from our processor. While law enforcement limits the information we can share, we will communicate additional information as we are able.”

Sonic is the United States’ largest drive-in restaurant chain, with more than 3,500 locations. The company is still investigating the alleged breach and said that it is too early to tell what locations were affected and to what extent.

Money expert Clark Howard says the No. 1 way to protect yourself from identity fraud is by freezing your credit.
