Zombie returns are coming back to haunt the credit card statements of consumers. I want to tell you what they’re all about and how to protect yourself.

Here’s how this plays out: You return something to an online store. You get your credit, but then months later, the charge is reposted to your credit card account. If you’re not paying attention, you could end up paying for an item you didn’t keep.

So what can you do to protect yourself?

When you return something, you normally do it via UPS or FedEx. Both make it very easy to track your return. I recommend you print out the slip showing the item has been returned. That gives you the documentation necessary to have that credit reinstated, and to fight the battle with the online seller if a problem arises.

It’s simple proof. It’s easily available and costs you nothing, so I say it’s the best cheap insurance.
